FERIA DEL ORINOCO

Once called the Feria de La Sapora
The Orinoco river system is the third largest in the world, originating along the southern borders of Venezuela and Brazil, in the state of Amazonas. The Orinoco river basin is huge, covering more than one million square kilometers. The name Orinoco is derived from Guarauno words meaning “a place to paddle”—i.e., a navigable place.

When the river is at its highest from the annual rains in July and August, the fishing is also at its best. The Feria del Orinoco takes place annually in Ciudad Bolivar, the commerical center of Guyanas state. Here fishermen compete in the Feria de la Pesca de la Zapoara when the brightly colored zapoara fish come out from the safety of lagoons and swim in the main river.

This festival used to be called the Feria de La Sapora when it involved only fishing. Now the festival has expanded to include a number of aquatic sports, a bicycling competition, arts and crafts and exhibitions of agricultural and industrial products.

There are also cultural events, including music and dance. A traditional saying of the festival is si un visitante come zapoara se queda en Guayana pero si se come la cabeza, se casa con una guayanesa, which translate to if a visitor eats a zapoara fish, he will stay in Guyana, but if he eats the fishhead, he will marry a Guyanese woman.

Ciudad Bolivar is a jumping off spot for Canaima, Angel Falls and Mount Roraima, top destinations in Venezuela.
