GETTING AROUND
-
AIR: LAN (www.lan.com) services most major town and cities throughout Chile. SKY (www.skyairline.cl) and Aerolineas del Sur (02 210 9000) are both relatively new airlines and their network routes are a little less extensive than LAN, but still offer competitive fares. LAN also offers a domestic air pass that is worth investigating.
-
BUS: Buses are frequent and of good quality with overland buses fitted with full reclining seats and with meals served. Recommended long distance buses: Pullman (www.pullman.cl) and Tur-Bus (www.turbus.com). Due to the number of bus companies, bus fares are at competitive rates. Booking in advance is a must for bus travel during the holidays periods.
-
TAXIS: Taxis are metered and in some places there is a surcharge applied during late at night. For long distant rides you can agree on a set fare before setting off. There is also taxi collectivos which follow certain routes (the route is usually displayed in the front windscreen)- fares are set for these collectivos.
-
TRAIN: There is a state owned train line and passenger services that run from Santiago to Puerto Montt. Regional train lines are in the Valparaiso and Concepcion areas. Santiago also has quite an extensive inner-city metro system.
