Is Colombia a safe country to travel in?
Traveling in rural and remote areas of Colombia is still relatively dangerous with numerous reports of violence and kidnapping. It is recommended that travelers stick to the main tourist areas. Traveling in the major cities and tourist towns is as safe as most towns and cities in South America. Tourists need to use common sense, such as not wearing expensive jewelry, or flashing lots of cash around. Don’t accept drinks from strangers and only travel in lisenced taxis.

Is the water safe to drink?
As with most South American countries it is recommended that you drink only bottled water, water that has previously been boiled for at least 5 minutes, or water that has been purified using purification tablets. It is recommended for those with sensitive stomachs to clean your teeth with bottled water and to avoid ice, unless it has been confirmed that it is safe.

Do I need a visa and how long can I stay for?
To visit Colombia you need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months. Travelers are entitled to stay for up to 90 days. Most counties no not require a visa. As always visa requirements are subject to change. For the lastest information on entry requirements it is best to contact the Panama embassy or consulate in your country before travelling.

Will my electrical appliances work?
Colombia uses 110 volts AC (60 Hz). In the large towns and cities there are many shops that sell adapters.

Do I need to be immunized against any diseases?
Hepatitas A, B (for travelers who are likely to have intimate contact with the locals or are planning to stay for 6 months or more) Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Rabies (for those people traveling to remote areas and are likely to have contact with animals in areas without medical treatment). For Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Tetanus-diphtheria is is best to consult with your doctor before traveling. These are the recommendations by MD Travel Health. As with all advice, it is best to consult your doctor at least 2 months before traveling.

How expensive is Colombia?
Colombia’s prices are comparable to most South American countries. Hostels generally cost between $3 – 5 US per night, a meal at a mid range restaurant will set you back about $3, and a 3 hour bus trip should cost about $4.

Will I be able to access the internet?
In the majority of towns, except in remote regions there are many internet cafes to choose from. Many hotels and even some hostels will have internet available to their guests. This will either be included with the cost of the room or an additional fee may be charged. Expect to pay about $1 per hour in the large towns and cities. Most large towns and cities have access to broadband.

Colombia’s official time is Greenwich Mean Time minus 5 hours (GMT-5) (normal/summer).
