GETTING AROUND
-
The Pan-American Highway runs the length of Ecuador and connects the Northern provinces with those in the south, as well as connecting with Columbia in the north and Peru in the south. You can catch a bus from Columbia to Peru in about 18 hours. There are a range of bus companies that operate long distance journeys. The quality of the roads, even sections of the highways are highly variable and so are the buses. It is best to get the tourist buses as opposed to the often overcrowded local ones. Local buses also are renowned for pick pockets that enjoy the crowded conditions. There are also many airlines that fly to most major centres through out Ecuador. Flights can usually be booked at short notice. As always, take taxis after dark, even for relatively short trips.
