In pre-Columbian times, Honduras was part of the Mesoamerican cultural area. In the west, the Maya civilization flourished for hundreds of years, and their main settlement within Honduras’s was in Copán. Remains of other Pre-Columbian cultures are found throughout the country. Christopher Columbus landed on the mainland near modern Trujillo in 1502 and named the country Honduras, which means depths, for the deep waters off its coast.

The country was under Spanish rule between 1502 and 1821, during which time there was a lot of fighting over Honduras by the Spanish conquers. Many native people along the north coast of Honduras were captured and taken as slaves to work on Spain's Caribbean plantations. In its first years of independence, Honduras was part of the United Provinces of Central America until that fell apart in 1840. Honduras came under influence of Guatemala and later of the United States of America.  The influence of the banana companies became so large that it became a ´Banana Republic´. In the 20th century there were both democratic and dictatorial governments in Honduras and there was the Soccer War with El Salvador.
