Lake Titicaca Island & Village Tour (4 days)

Lake Titicaca Island

Come and take a tour of “The Original” Copacabana in Bolivia. The name of this beautiful beach is taken from the original Aymarian word “kawana” which means “view of the lake”. This place was revered by the Incas and later became an important Catholic pilgrimage site because of miracles which occurred near the lake. Our Lake Titicaca tour will take you to see the whole region in its variety. You will travel from the lakeside town of Copacabana to small, quiet farming and fishing villages to the spectacular Island of the Sun and the impressive “Sleeping Dragon” of Santiago de Okola.

On your first day you will take a tour of the Copacabana beach and the surrounding areas. Copacabana is famous for a reason and you will be stunned by the beauty of the sapphire water against the altiplano as you enjoy lunch beside the highest altitude sweet water lake in world. Copacabana is the only public beach in Bolivia and a fantastic place to enjoy some time relaxing beside the water. In Copacabana you will be able to climb the Calvario that overlooks the beautiful harbor, visit the Moorish cathedral and shop for handicrafts on the town’s main street. Also take some time to enjoy the famous salmon trout or “trucha” that are caught here in this very lake.

On the second day you will go on a guided tour of Isla del Sol. Here you will take a step back in time as there are no motor vehicles or paved roads on the Islands. Follow in the footsteps of the Incas as you climb the steps to reach the sacred water Yumani, believed to be the fountain of youth, where you can take in astounding views of the lake.

On day three of this Bolivia tour we take a short hike to Challapampa which was founded by the Incas as a service for nearby ceremonial sites. After this, we travel by boat across the lake to Santiago de Okla, a small traditional farming and fishing village where you will spend some time with your Bolivian host family. After meeting your new host family, you will share a traditional lunch with them while sharing your customs and ways of life. Food is very important for the villagers and the region has a rich agricultural heritage. Potatoes, Quinoa and Osa are only some of the crops native to this area. The natives of Santiago de Okola enjoy sharing their food traditions with the tourists and therefore always try to include locally grown dishes in their meals.

Enjoy discovering the traditional way of life in the village as you meet the families, and the different varieties of animals that they care for such as goats, sheep and chickens. Then you will take a tour of the Santiago de Okla community to discover how it is run including discovering traditional farming and fishing methods and how medicinal plants are used in the community. This will be followed by a fascinating tour of the community museum where you can see artifacts from the village’s past which have been preserved by the community. Who better to explain these items and bring them to life than the very ancestors of those who used them. To finish the day your host family will prepare a delicious family meal followed by a community bonfire where you can enjoy a perfectly clear view of the night sky.

On the last day of our tour to  Lake Titicaca we will go on an excursion in Santiago de Okola in which you will have the chance to experience a weaving workshop. Yu will get to see the locals weaving traditional agu ayos and t’aris traditional cloths, and then try your hand at weaving yourself. Afterwards you have the option of ascending the impressive sleeping dragon that lies next to the village to enjoy the breathtaking views of the lake from its head or spend some free time enjoying the pristine beaches nearby before heading back to La Paz after lunch.
