Potosí Colonial City & Silver Mines Tour

Uyuni Salt Flats

Potosi is one of the most important cities of South America’s colonial history and an excursion through its historical center and the silver mine is therefore not to be missed when travelling in Bolivia. Potosi lies beneath the Cerro de Potosi which is known by locals as “The Rich Hill” as it is thought to be made of silver ore. It was the main supply of silver for the Spanish during the time of the Spanish empire in South America. On this silver mine excursion you will trace the journey of silver from its origins in the mines of Cerro Rico all the way through the production of coins.

Our first stop on the tour is Casa de Moneda, where silver was processed for transportation to Spain and elsewhere. The coins that were made here were so famous that a new phrase “to be worth a potosi” was coined by Miguel de Cervantes.  Here you can see the actual machinery that was used to create the money that built the Spanish empire. It is considered one of the most important museums in Bolivia and the building has UNESCO World Heritage status.

Uyuni Salt Flats

The tour in Potosi also includes a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the historic center of Potosi, where you can witness firsthand how the colonial buildings and churches have been restored by skilled craftsmen and experience a side of Potosi only glimpsed by locals.

After a delicious lunch at a local restaurant where you can sample typical dishes from the region we continue our Potosi excursion and  take you deep into the heart of the Cerro Rico. It is here where most of Potosi’s silver has been mined and where silver mining continues today. Here you will take a trip down into a working silver mine and experience the life of modern-day miners and their daily work in the mines. Be prepared for a fully immersive experience as you say goodbye to the sunshine and travel deep into the depths of the earth. Ensure that you bring some gifts to offer at the shrine of Tio, the god of the underworld, who will bestow good luck on you and the miners on your once in a lifetime experience of the underworld of the Cerro Rico.
