Urban Trek Sucre
This Sucre excursion is a great outing and should not be missed when travelling in Bolivia! Our walk around the beautiful UNESCO heritage site of Sucre begins at the Plaza de la Recoleta. Here, you can take pictures from the fantastic vantage point of “El Mirador” and enjoy panoramic views of the city and its surrounding mountains. We are now at an altitude of over 2900 meters above sea level.
After the Plaza de la Recoleta, we visit the world renowned ASUR Museum of Indigenous Art. ASUR is one of the most important museums in Bolivia with a beautiful and valuable collection of native textiles. Frequently, local weavers are working on their textiles in the museum; this is a wonderful opportunity to witness their complex work first hand. Afterwards we will discover why Sucre has earned the nickname “La Cuidad Blanco” and has been named as a site of historical importance. We will stroll past the quaint whitewashed shops and houses that line the streets of the historical centre, considered as one of the most beautiful and well-conserved city centers of South America.
Our experienced and informative bilingual guide will help you to uncover some of Bolivia’s fascinating history as we stop at “The house of Liberty” where the declaration of independence was signed in 1825. We then visit the colorful Mercado Central, where you can see and sample indigenous produce grown in the local area.
Until the eighteenth century, Sucre was the judicial, religious and cultural centre of the region, and it is still the legal capital of Bolivia. Our tour in Sucre also includes a visit to the Palacio de Justicia, home to the justice branch of Bolivia’s national government which is an outstanding example of republican period architecture. Our walk through Sucre ends in the tranquil Parque Boliviar where you can take some time to relax and absorb all of the wonderful experiences of the day.
