Location: Baños
Starting / Ending Point: A fixed starting point in Quito

Baños de Agua Santa, commonly referred to as Baños, is a city in eastern Tungurahua Province, at approximately 3.5 hours from Quito. It is known as the "Gateway to the Amazon", as it is located on the Pastaza River in the Amazon River basin. Baños (‘baths”) is named after the hydrothermal springs of mineral water located around the city. It is situated at 1800 meters and has a subtropical climate.

This weekend trip offers you the opportunity to get to know this lovely town. Transport from Quito and accommodation in Baños are included, but there are no fixed excursions planned, so that you can decide for yourself how to spend your weekend. In Baños there is something for everyone to enjoy!

We leave on Friday from Quito to Baños, a nice trip during which you can see – if the weather is good – the volcanoes of Cotopaxi, Illinizas (two peaks) and Carihuarazo. In Baños you will stay two nights in the hostel Chimenea, located just outside the centre (just a little five minute walk to the square). It is a nice and quiet hostel with a swimming- and steam pool.

On Saturday and Sunday morning you can choose from an array of activities, such as:

  • The therapeutic hot pools where you can sit and relax. Under the waterfall the pools are the best, though it appears that the water maybe is dirty because of all the minerals. In the weekends the baths can be crowded, so be prepared.
  • Taste the cane and the melcochas (toffees) which are attached to the doorposts of the little shops.
  • The basilica is definitely worth a visit; the Virgin of the Holy Water, who is said to have saved Baños a couple of times, is shown here in some beautiful paintings.
  • On the outskirt of the town you will find a zoo where monkeys, jaguars, turtles, kapibaras and bears can be seen.
  • The tour along the waterfalls is very beautiful and if you are lucky you can see some special animals. It is a nice trip to do on mountain bike so you could consider renting a bike. The trip to the largest waterfall, Pailón del Diablo in the village of Río Verde, is about 21 kilometers and takes by bike about three hours by bike.
  • The same tour along the waterfalls can also be done in a Chiva, an open wooden bus that will take the same road as the cyclists and will stop at every waterfall.
  • Go rafting on the river Pastaza. The rapids are spectacular and suitable for beginners too. A half day tour costs about $30 per person and can be booked in town.
  • At night you can go with the Chiva to the cross on top of the mountain. If the weather is good, you will have a clear view at the active volcano Tungurahua.
  • There are beautiful walks and horse riding trips in the area around Baños. Ask the local tourist office for the routes.

In the evening there are plenty of options for a nice dinner. On Sunday we return to Quito after lunch.
