THE PROJECT

In 1996 this volunteer organization was founded in Curitiba to help children who come from abusive households. The children who are cared for in the organization range in age from new born to 12 years old and stay within the house while they either wait to return back to their family or to be adopted. There are now two homes run by this organization; the first cares for approximately 13 new borns and the second cares for approximately 10 children aged 2 to 12. The project provides a high level of care to each of the children, ensuring they receive education, medical and dental care, psychological assistance and speech therapy as required. The organization relies solely on the help of volunteers and from donations internationally. Without the help of volunteers, this project would not be possible, and each volunteer provides assistance in many areas but most importantly to give love and affection to these abused children who have suffered a great deal.

YOUR ROLE AS A VOLUNTEER

The tasks you will be required to complete each day vary according to what the children need but there are many different activities in which to participate in according to your talents and abilities; creativity is always encouraged when creating games and crafts for the children to do. Volunteers can participate in any of the following:

  • Play with the children and encourage them to use toys, make handicrafts and participate in art workshops (painting, theatre, dance)
  • Help with homework
  • Teach English
  • Provide love and attention

Volunteers have the option of working in either the morning or the afternoon during this project but are required to commit a minimum of 15 hours per week. During the mornings the older children are at school (ages 5 and up) and partner schools sponsor sports activities in the afternoons.

WHAT THE PROJECT NEEDS

The following are the guidelines used by the organization, however exceptions can be made based on the experience and enthusiasm of each volunteer:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Minimum time commitment of 4 weeks
  • Minimum level of Portuguese required
  • Passion for nature
  • Desire to help others

Volunteers with only a basic knowledge of Portuguese are welcomed on this project however, it is recommended to attend the language program prior to starting this project in order to enhance your communication abilities and therefore your overall experience.
