THE PROJECT

This project is situated in and around Puerto Quito, about 140 km Northwest of Quito. The project consists of several farms (fincas) situated in an area with tropical rainforest at the Caoní river. As a volunteer you can choose between different types of fincas to work at, or you can rotate between them. Some of the types of fincas include: a fruit farm, a chocolate factory, a family farm or a finca where they produce ornamental flowers. Most projects have similar tasks, but regardless of the location you are sure to learn a lot about nature throughout your work. Puerto Quito offers a relaxing environment with plenty of options for adventure filled excursions. The project also works with a local school, where you may be provided the opportunity to help teach.

YOUR ROLE AS A VOLUNTEER

As the project consists of many smaller, different projects (farms), activities vary according to where you are placed. As a volunteer you may be asked to make an inventory of the existing plants and species present at the finca, collect seeds, set up a nursery for trees and fruit plants, cultivate greens, vegetables etc., harvest fruits, improve or maintain the paths, or take care of the animals. You may also be asked to teach at the local primary school. Volunteers are expected to work four to six hours a day, Monday to Friday.

WHAT THE PROJECT NEEDS

To work at this project volunteers must have a basic knowledge of Spanish, a love for nature,  an adaptable, flexible attitude, not afraid to get your hands dirty, willing to work at several different projects/locations, willing to live in basic housing, and able to commit to a minimum of 4 weeks.
