ECOLOGICAL PROJECTS IN GUATEMALA GH-EC2

THE PROJECT

This organization was founded in 1989 by a group of Guatemalan citizens who saw their natural heritage, especially their wildlife, disappearing before their eyes. This inspired them to spearhead an initiative in Parque Hawaii with the hopes of helping to save the wildlife in Guatemala.

Parque Hawaii is home to a variety of animals, including the sea turtle and iguana. The turtle season in Hawaii is from June to December with peak months taking place during August and September. For the much scarcer leatherbacks the nesting season is November to January.

The mangrove conservation project is near the town of Hawaii.

YOUR ROLE AS A VOLUNTEER

Volunteers will help with tasks that may include anything from conducting nightly patrols of area beaches in search of nesting sea turtles, collection and burial of eggs in the hatchers or collection of research data. There may also be the opportunity to take part in the iguana captive breeding program or the reforestation of the mangrove or you may even help to lead educational activities and projects in a nearby school or community.

The Environmental Education Program is an excellent program ideal for volunteers with a higher level of Spanish. Those who participate can engage in a range of environmental education activities. These may include organizing beach clean-ups, hatching releases and eco-tours or reforestations with the underserved school children.

Volunteers who wish to carry out internships as part of their university studies may do so through this organization. Therefore, the period of time for which you commit is typically longer. And you must be able to speak Spanish fairly well. Examples of past projects involved the development of ecotourism activities, public relations strategies, inventories of flora and fauna and sea turtle research.

WHAT THE PROJECT NEEDS

  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic and commitment to the project at hand
  • Appreciation for and ability to thrive in an autonomous work environment
  • Being accustomed to "rustic" working conditions and a willingness to carry out daily chores such as cleaning cages or washing dishes
  • 1 week minimum commitment is requested, though 4 weeks is encouraged so as to make the most of your stay
  • Though Spanish language ability is not required, a basic level or beyond will not only enhance your effectiveness but your satisfaction with the project as a whole. If you don’t already speak Spanish and you plan to volunteer for an extended period, we recommend that you spend your first weeks studying in Antigua, a world-renowned Spanish language center and a stunningly beautiful colonial city surrounded by volcanoes. Please ask us for further information and prices
  • Minimum age at least 18 years
