THE PROJECT

This organization is situated in San Cristóbal de Las Casas. The mission of the project is to help indigenous girls, boys and youths in the area in the promotion, defence and exercise of their rights through processes that encourage participation aimed at improving their quality of life from a cultural perspective. At the same time, the local population is educated about the need to respect the rights of children and young people, and the organization is involved in additional activities such as research, network building and lobbying.

YOUR ROLE AS A VOLUNTEER

Your activities depend on the group where you will be working. There are three teams set up, each focused on a different age group:

  • Early Childhood (0-6 years)
  • Working Children (6 – 13 years)
  • Young People (13-20 years)

When working with the babies and toddlers, you will be looking after them and taking care of them. Your duties will include washing, changing and feeding the children and assist the teachers in educational activities and workshops.

When working with the children from 6 to 13, you will work both at the premises of the organisation as well as in public spaces and markets of the city. You will be doing games or other activities with the kids, such as making videos. The aim of the work is to support the children’s education, help them stay at school, to help them develop their own strategies to protect themselves at work, and to help them learn what their rights as children are.

When working for the ‘young people’ project, volunteers will help setting up activities and campaigns to discuss issues regarding sexual health and the human rights of young people.

WHAT THE PROJECT NEEDS

The organization is looking for enthusiastic and responsible volunteers between 18 and 30 years old, with sensitivity towards and interest for the Mexican indigenous culture and an interest or background in human rights. It is preferable to have a background or studies in fields of education, social work, pedagogy, human sciences or psychology. Your level of Spanish should be at least basic in order to have a valuable and rewarding volunteer experience; to work with the young people, an intermediate level at the least is required in order to communicate effectively with these youngsters. It is advisable to take Spanish classes before or during your volunteer project. Please ask for further information.
